Here are some factors that may interfere with male fertility: Heat -- Sperm do best in a slightly cool environment, which is why the testes are located in the scrotum, away from the heat of the body. A hot bath or a soak in the hot tub immediately before sex may temporarily interfere with sperm function. Even excessive bicycling can affect the sperm. Men who bike should wear padded bike shorts, take frequent breaks, and be sure the bicycle seat doesn t put a lot of pressure on the testicles. Working in a very warm environment may also pose a problem. On the other hand, contrary to popular belief, wearing tight pants, briefs or athletic supports, even every day, does not interfere with male fertility. Cigarettes -- Men who smoke may have reduced sperm quality; they also have lower sex drives and have sex less frequently. Although it isn t clear how bad smoking is for male fertility, quitting may help the woman to quit, which in turn would be good for fertility and for the health of the baby-to-be. Substance Use and Medications -- Anabolic steroids, the kind taken by athletes, can contribute to infertility. Alcohol doesn t affect fertility in men unless it is so abused that is causes liver changes or sexual difficulties. Cocaine or heavy marijuana use temporarily reduces the number and quality of sperm by as much as 50%. Some prescription medicines aren t safe for a man to use while his partner might become pregnant. Check with your doctor if you are on any medications. Diet and Exercise -- Although body weight probably doesn t play the role that it does in female fertility, deficiencies of vitamin C, zinc, or folic acid can lead to problems with sperm production. If a man s diet is lacking, a daily multivitamin should supply the necessary vitamins and minerals. Timing -- Sperm counts are best when ejaculation occurs every day to every other day. There is no need, and even some harm, in "saving up" for your fertile time. The window of opportunity lasts a few days. Sex every one to two days around ovulation provides the best chance for pregnancy.
