Factors That Interfere With a Woman s Fertility

Myths about fertility date back to ancient times. People may offer you some strange ideas about how to speed up conception. It is true, though, that some lifestyle factors play a role in success or failure.
Factors that can interfere with fertility for women:

Cigarettes -- Smoking cigarettes interferes with getting pregnant and increases the chance of miscarrying. Although some smokers conceive without difficulty, cycle for cycle, being a non-smoker improves your odds of having a baby. Plus it is much better for the baby if you don t smoke once you are pregnant
Substance Use and Medications -- Avoiding alcohol, marijuana and other drugs may also help you achieve pregnancy. Moderate alcohol intake (as few as five drinks per week) can impair conception and may cause birth defects. There is some evidence that medication, including over-the-counter pain medicines like ibuprofen, can interfere with fertility in women. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is probably safe. Check with your doctor to find out if any medication you take might affect fertility or the health of your baby.
Caffeine -- Caffeine may increase the chance of miscarriage and hinder fertility, so limit caffeine use (including coffee, caffeinated teas and soft drinks, heavy chocolate consumption and medications containing caffeine) while you are trying to conceive.
Occupational Exposures -- Chemical exposures at work or home can potentially interfere with fertility. If you are exposed to pesticides or other chemicals, get the MSDS data sheets from your employer so you can learn about possible reproductive effects.
Stress -- Everyone has a story or an opinion on this, but isn t known if job stress or other life stresses can cause significant fertility problems.  Despite the urban legends, adopting a baby doesn t improve your chances of getting pregnant.
Diet and Exercise -- Normal body weight is best. Eating disorders, underweight, and overweight can interfere with getting pregnant, especially if your menstrual periods are irregular or absent. Although regular exercise is good for your health and for weight control, exercising more than an hour a day may interfere with ovulation. Normal body weight and exercise in moderation are good for fertility.
Age -- Older women have a lower per-month chance of getting pregnant than younger women do. By age 40, fertility really drops down, and after age 44 pregnancy is very unlikely.
Irregular Cycles -- If your periods are absent or very irregular, pregnancy is less likely, and medical attention should be sought if you aren t pregnant within a few months.
