Sexual Coercion

Sexual coercion is a phenomenon that is a growing concern among researchers. It is estimated that for every rape reported, 3-10 rapes are not reported (Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987).The results of studies based on adolescent responses suggest a prevalence of sexual coercion ranging from 21% to 24% of all respondents (Small & Kerns, 1993; Vicary, Klingaman, & Harkness, 1995).

One of the limitations of the available research on sexual coercion is that most of the studies have been conducted with white college students (Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987; Poitras and Lavoie, 1995; Small & Kerns, 1993).According to Small and Kerns (1993), data concerned with sexual coercion in early and middle adolescence is also nearly nonexistent. This is surprising given the fact that most people have their first sexual experiences during adolescence (Poitras & Lavoie, 1995) and some of these first experiences are coercive, which can add to the psychological strain (Small & Kerns, 1993).

While there is very limited data on coerced first sexual intercourse experiences, the descriptive data show that it is a phenomenon affecting adolescents.Bajracharya and Sarvela (1995), found that one percent of the men reported that their first sexual intercourse was against their will, while 14% of the women surveyed reported nonconsensual first intercourse.Research suggests that not only is sexual coercion prevalent it also is related to emotional and behavioral problems.

Data concerning coercion as a part of first sexual intercourse is related to later risky behaviors for adolescents (Caceres, Marin, & Hudes, 2000).Coercion has also been associated with poorer body image, lower sexual esteem, depression, and substance abuse (Zweig & Crockett, 1999;Tubman, Langer, and Calderon, 2001).Choquet, Darves-Bornoz, Ledoux, Manfredi, and Hassler (1997) found that independent of sex and age, sexually coerced adolescents report a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms, sleep disorders, and a higher rate of somatic complaints. They are also more likely to report substance abuse, truancy, violent behavior, and running away.
