The basic pathological changes of this disease is the myocardium which leads to abnormal contraction, but it does not involve the heart valve, congenital anomalies, coronary atherosclerosis, systemic or pulmonary hypertension heart diseases. This disease can be classified into specific cardiomyopathy (continuous cardiomyopathy) and unknown etiological cardiomyopathy (primary or idiopathic cardiomyopathy). The specific cardiomyopathy occurs in some systemic diseases. While the idiopathic cardiomyopathy can be divided into a few types: congestive (dilatation), hypertrophic(obstructive) and restrictive; they occurs gradually with unknown cause of heart cardiac enlargement which leads to the heart failure. The clinical presentations of the idiopathic cardiomyopathy includes pumping failure (congestive heart failure) symptoms, such as dypsnoe after physical exertion, night cardiac dypsnoe, sometimes with pulmonary edema, cardiac enlargement but without commonly seen cardiac disease clinical symptoms. In palpation and percussion of the heart may reveal cardiac enlargement, two apex beat may be palpable, pulsation of the arteries which is small and fast but without increased of pulse pressure. In auscultation, one can hears the gallop rhythm with systolic murmurs at fourth interspace of left chest, systolic murmurs due to relative mitral insufficiency, systolic murmur of tricuspid and pulmonary trunk and etc. The x-ray reveals dilatation of heart chambers. While the ECG reveals pathological hypertrophy of left and right heart chamber along with overstrain, one may also encounter with various arrhythmias pattern of ECG and ECG which is similar to myocardial infarction. This disease is still an unknown etiological disease, some thought that this disease is related to chronic stage or side effects of myocarditis; or it may related to some protozoal infections; also may due to cardiac auto-antibody reaction towards infections, it is a type of auto-immune disease.
The diagnosis of cardiomyopathy depends on clinical signs mentioned above, radiological examination and ECG,  especially cardiovascular angiography, left heart catheter, ultrasonography which can collect specific data.
In traditional chinese medicine (TCM), there is no name for this disease; according to its symptoms, it is categorized as xin dong ji (heart palpitation) and xiong bi (chest numbness). This disease is often caused by weakness of heart and Qi (energy), Yang insufficiency of heart and kidney, and weakness of Yin of Qi ; various clinical signs such as internal fluid regulation is stopped, overflooded the heart and lungs, appearance of weak Yin and strong heat , mentally disturbed and etc.

[Clinical treatment result] There were 393 cases with 380 cases recovered completely, 10 cases shown effectiveness and 3 cases ineffective.
