Once it is penetrated due to otitis media (inflammation of middle ear) or external injury, it can resulted in two main complications: protective function is impaired causing external microbes infections, drainage of dirts, invasion of foreign substances where all these cause suppurative infection; penetration of tympanic membrane diminishes the vibration surface area and causes decreased of hearing function.
